Dr. Bruce W. Karrh

SAVANNAH - Dr. Bruce Wakefield Karrh, 80, died Thursday, February 9, 2017, at Candler Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 29, 1936 in Carbon Hill, AL, he was the son of the late Barney Bruce Karrh and Lorene Elizabeth Wakefield.
After receiving his bachelor of science in chemistry from the University of Alabama in 1958, he graduated with a doctor of medicine from Medical College of Alabama in 1962. He had medical residencies in Texas and opened a private practice in Athens, AL in 1965. In 1970 he relocated to Richmond, VA and became a plant physician for E. I. du Pont de Nemours and in 1974 became the director of Haskell Laboratory of Industrial Toxicology in Newark. He was relocated by du Pont to Wilmington, DE and became the medical director for the company. In 1983 he was named vice president of Occupational Safety and Health and later became vice president for Health, Safety, and the Environment. He retired from du Pont in 1996.
Dr. Karrh received the Health Achievement Award in 1979 from the Fellow American College of Occupational and Environmental Health and the William S. Knudsen award in 1986. He was a trustee for the Thomas Jefferson University Medical College and the Diplomate American Board of Preventive Medicine in Occupational Medicine.
Dr. Karrh was a medevac flight surgeon during the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Air Force.
He moved to Savannah in 1996 and settled at The Landings on Skidaway Island. He was a member of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his loving wife, Janice Tillman Karrh; his daughters, Kathryn Cashin, Tammy Gatch, and Allyson Downs; sons, Bruce Karrh, Jr., Lee Karrh(Renee), and Ryan Gatch; grandchildren, Katy, Erin, Lauren, Brooks, Meg, “Bitty Boy” Christopher, and Brooklyn; his sister, Sarah Braucher; his brother, John Karrh(Janis); and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Karrh, and a sister, Elizabeth Scott.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, in the chapel of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. Interment, in the Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery, will be private.
